Do You Hear What I Hear?

I was a young boy at our candlelight service when the youth group captivated us all with the overlapping echoes of “Do You Hear What I Hear”. I remember telling my mom, “I like that song about the star!”  A few days later Bing Crosby’s rendition was spinning on our turntable.

I like the way the song’s questions, answers and echoes take us on an advent journey culminating with Jesus bringing us Goodness and Light. First we are asked, “Do you see what I see?” We reminisce with visions of the Star of Bethlehem. (Matthew 2: 1-2)  Next we are asked if we hear, and we recall the angels announcing Jesus' birth. (Luke 2:13 - 14).  Third, a humble boy asks the mighty king if he knows “The Child is born”, and we are encouraged to bring Jesus our best. (Matthew 2:10-12) The last verse proclaims “The Child will bring us goodness and light”, and we are reassured that Christ’s light overcomes all darkness! (Luke 2: 10 - 12)

The song's humble imagery illuminates child-like faith in me.  May you see, hear and know the true goodness and light of our Lord Jesus Christ this Christmas.
