All is Well

There was a Christmas in my teens where I did not find the gift I’d asked for under the tree. My parents were very thoughtful gift givers and I didn’t understand… it was #1 on my list… a perfect choice. My dilemma was this: ask and seem ungrateful or don’t ask and wonder. Well, I asked. It turns out they’d gotten that very gift shortly after my list found its way under the fridge magnet, and my mom had totally forgotten about it in her ‘secret’ drawer! We laughed. It became a family holiday joke. I may or may not be able to relate.
All was well at Christmas that year. Thoughtful gifts, delicious food, family… no school! As I’ve gotten older and enjoyed a host of favorite Christmas traditions, my prayer always comes back to my desire for all to be well with those I love. I think about the imagery in this song, All is Well - both men and angels rejoicing at the birth of the Savior, the Light of Love breaking into the darkness and His arrival being something to which our only response is to sing “hallelujah”. Oh, and so much singing. How it must have echoed… a beautiful cacophony of voices, melody and harmony, all in praise to the One who was and is Emmanuel. All was well that long ago night among the straw. All is well today because Christ came down, born to redeem us. All is well.
