As With Gladness, Men of Old

“As they, so may we!” The first 3 stanzas of this precious old hymn, written by William Dix in 1858 while recuperating from illness, challenge us to live here and now as those who sought the Savior at His birth. As Wise Men were guided by a star—a symbol of God’s guidance—so we should seek to be drawn to the Son by God’s guiding Holy Spirit. Joy comes in our own journey of faith when we seek Christ with the same fervor as those who did so in the first century.
The final 2 stanzas shift to our future hope (assurance) of the heavenly country, where no guiding star nor created light will be necessary, as we will be forever with The Light, whom no clouds will obscure and whose brightness will never fade. What a beautiful promise of never-ending joy.
As we reflect on this hymn, be challenged to consider whether we are seeking Him daily. Are we bringing our gifts—time, talents, treasure—to Him? May we follow The Light with gladness, surrendering all to the One who came to save us. Only in so doing will we experience the true joy of knowing Him.
