Good Friday - Service of Tenebrae

  • Meadow Springs Community Church 12647 Southwest 62nd Avenue Portland, OR, 97219 United States (map)

Often called ‘a Service of Shadows’, the tenebrae service marks the events of the day Jesus was crucified. The tradition dates back to the ninth century and is characterized by readings that tell the story of Jesus’ final moments, death and burial. After each reading, a candle is extinguished to symbolize the world growing darker, and silence is kept to help us feel the story internally.

We will be gathering in person for the service, but if you want to participate online, we will be live-streaming the service. If you’d like to hold this service in your home apart from what we’re doing, there will be recommendations coming soon that include ideas for preparing the worship space (including a family-friendly candle project), preparing your family or other participants, preparing the music and most importantly, preparing your own heart to experience a piece of those dark days preceding His resurrection.
