The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy

Listening to this song’s catchy tune but simplistic and, dare I say, excessively repetitive lyrics I groan. I hate 7-11 songs. How can anyone find such a song good? Bad grammar, no story. The lyrics are so simple. It's so straightforward. And it sticks in your head, playing over and over again so you can't get rid of it. Finding anything positive to say about this song is impossible. I slouch in my chair, fingers tapping at the keyboard, then pounding on the delete button. Lord, I just don’t see the good in this song.

“It's not about the lyrics,” a soft voice whispers, “consider the structure.”

Structure? How will that help? It's so simple, there's nothing I can do with it.

“Exactly,” He whispers, “there's nothing you need to do but receive.”

I stare at the lyrics again. The virgin had a baby boy. The heavens rejoiced. The shepherds came to see him. The wise men journeyed to meet him. In so few words, it tells such a massive story. Such a simple message. He loves us. He saves us. All we have to do is believe.

Amazing how the simplest things are the most powerful. May the simple message of His love get stuck in your head this season and let us rejoice at the simplicity of His message.
